The Raw Power of Forgiveness: Healing Wounds and Embracing Freedom

1: Introduction Can you think of an instance when someone deeply harmed you? This can be a friend who broke your trust, a loved one who disappointed you, or a co-worker who undercut your efforts. In these situations, forgiveness may appear to be an impossible task. Have you ever thought about the transformational power of forgiveness? However, this is a skill that only the strongest and most mature people possess. Forgiveness can liberate you from a constant anger towards a person and can cure relationships. As Buddha once said: “ Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned .”. Maximizing Efficiency: Automatic Pilot - Building Habits

1: Introduction to the automatic pilot

In your daily life, you make more than 100 choices a day although you are often only aware of less than 10. So you run your day-to-day life mostly on automatic pilot. You might argue that if a choice is made unconsciously, it is not a choice. But the definition of a choice is the result of certain options you have available to you.

For example, for the breakfast you ate this morning, you had a few options but you probably chose your breakfast unconsciously.

2: Danger of the automatic pilot

These unconscious choices you make in your daily life are called habits. The problem with habits is that you are not sure if these unconscious choices are the right choices or not. It is thus important that you first think about these choices.

For example, every morning you eat bread with chocolate but haven’t really thought about the alternatives? Maybe if you made this choice consciously, you actually wanted to be healthier and chose bread with cheese because you like cheese just as much as chocolate.

My point is thus that you can stand still with your unconscious choices you make every day and think about whether it is the right choice or not.

3: Gift of the automatic pilot

The advantage of running your life on automatic pilot is that you reduce the amount of mental effort you spend throughout the day. To revisit the breakfast example, you don’t have the stress during the morning for deciding what to eat.

Some more examples of unconscious choices or habits are your morning routine, your path to school or work, whether you wish the cashier a good day or not, how you react to a person if something bothers you about them, what you do when you are stressed, checking your GSM every five minutes, your evening routine, at what time you go to bed and so on. These are all choices you probably make unconsciously.

By creating good daily habits, it also makes you feel better on a day-to-day basis which enables you to have less bad days. But good habits are not always the easiest to maintain. You are not going to feel like doing your habits all days but it surely helps to create a healthy amount of discipline. In following blogs, I will talk more about habits you might want to include in your life like a fixed hour to go to bed, a morning routine, an evening routine and so on.

4: How habits can help you reach your long-term goals

Habits are a very powerful tool when it comes to reaching your goals. For example, you want to become a runner, you could implement the habit of running each weekday just for 10 minutes. This may seem very logical but many people don’t use this habit. With New Year for example, people make resolutions like going to the gym each day to be more fit. They will start doing this everyday for 1 hour and after 5 days, they will already quit because it isn’t sustainable in the long run. On the other hand, if they had resolved to do 10 minutes of gym exercises every weekday, they would have less tension to do these exercises and hold on to them much longer. By choosing the second option, they would have been far more fit than training intensively for a few days.

5: Conclusion

The most important thing I want you to remember is that the way to have more control over your life, is by doing less things on automatic pilot. While it may save mental effort, it's crucial to assess whether your unconscious choices align with your goals and values. Take a moment to pause and consciously consider the decisions you make throughout the day.

Implementing this awareness can bring about positive changes and help you reach your long-term goals. Building good habits is key, as they provide a solid foundation for personal growth. Start small and focus on sustainable habits that align with your aspirations. Remember, it's the consistency and persistence in small actions that yield significant results over time.

6: Your next steps

Throughout my blogs I am going to give you a few steps on how you can implement what you have just read. These all take less than 5 minutes each day. I suggest you do these steps directly after you read this so you don’t forget.

1. Start noticing your habits: Take a piece of paper and write down the habits you have in your daily life. If you have no idea where to start, you might read the examples again. (2 minutes)

2. Be aware of them: The next day you wake up, you want to stand still at each of your habits and notice them. You don’t have to change them, just observe them. The first step to changing your behaviour is to be aware of your behaviour! (30 seconds)
