1) Introduction
There are lots of books about personal
growth. Therefore, it can sometimes get hard to get a clear overview of the
aspects of personal growth. It refers to the continuous process of improving
oneself in various aspects of life such as mental, emotional, physical, and
spiritual health. It is a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement that
allows individuals to reach their full potential and live a fulfilling life. This is important because it permits you to
be successful in life whereby success must be interpreted broadly. Success is
purely personal and is a measure of when an individual is satisfied with their life
at this moment. For some people, their professional success may be more important
to measure their success but others may value social life, physical health,
spiritual excellence,.. more. It also helps individuals help to overcome life’s
everyday challenges with more ease.
2) Understanding yourself
On the basis of personal growth lies self
knowledge. It involves gaining insight into your thoughts, feelings, values and
behaviour to better understand your characteristics. Self-awareness allows you
to make more conscious decisions which allows you to go where you want to go in
your life. A quote that can best describe this is one from the book “Kaizen”
from Anna Sólyom: “Some people live their lives as if they're on a train
going somewhere they don't want to be, but they stay on the train because
that's what they've always done”.
3) 5 Dimensions
According to me, there are 5 big dimensions
in personal growth that must be followed in order. It is essential that this is
in order because the one is the basis for the other. For example, you are going
to struggle if you want to have success in your professional life if you have
poor physical and mental health. I will discuss the 5 dimensions very briefly.
1) Physical health: Physical health is the first dimension and thus the most important
because it is the basis for the four others. The 3 most important aspects here
are food, sleep and physical exercise. Without eating healthy, you will feel bad
in your stomach and you won’t feel like doing any work at all. Sleep is essential
to being able to think clearly and lastly physical exercise increases your blood
circulation which also enforces your thinking capability.
2) Mental health: Mental health is less straight forward and will be a result from
finding succes in the four other dimensions.
3) Habits:
By becoming aware of your habits in your everyday life, you can start to change
them. By eliminating as much bad habits as possible and replacing them by
better alternatives, this can drastically improve your emotional stability and improve
your self image.
4) Social life: A human is a social creature and others will thus always be an
important part of your life. Even people who say they don’t need anyone, will
search for acknowledgement from others. It is thus very important to keep your
social contacts strong. The best tip I can give to keep these strong is by
being socially proactive. So don’t wait for others to contact you but take
initiative yourself by for example proposing a dinner together.
5) Professional life: Lastly, your profession is what you do everyday for a living. Here
you can find satisfaction by having close contact with colleagues and by seeking
for opportunities for growth in function but also by learning.
4) Kaizen
Kaizen is the Japanese term for continuous
improvement. This is crucial in personal growth because you can’t become the “perfect”
person in a year. It is something you have to work towards every day of your
life. By striving to become better in any aspect of your life and changing
little things each day, you will find success. To put this into practice, implementing
good habits are key. It is not necessary to completely change your life from
one day to the next.
5) Conclusion
The most important thing I want you to remember is that personal growth is a continuous journey of self-discovery and improvement across various dimensions of life, from physical and mental health to habits, social connections, and professional fulfillment, all achieved through persistence and little acts of improvement each day. It involves understanding yourself and improving
on the 5 dimensions. It requires persistence but it can be achieved with little
acts each day. I would like to leave you with a final thought: Succes is not
dependant on luck but on personal growth. By understanding yourself, having a
goal and being persistent in what you do, you will find success.
